 Higher Education

Home to Texas A&M University-Commerce, with a student population of 8,600, Commerce offers a unique quality of life not often seen in smaller rural towns. There is a real sense of "community", and the University plays a major role in the life of Commerce. Dr. Keith McFarland, President, recently completed six years on the Commerce EDC Board of Directors.  He has been associated with the University for well over thirty years.

As one of the oldest public universities in Texas, and now home of the only planetarium in the area, Texas A&M-Commerce takes pride in being a comprehensive, regional university offering undergraduate, master and doctoral degree programs.  With campuses in Commerce, Mesquite, Dallas and Navarro College Partnership in Corsicana, as well as state-of-the-art distance learning, the University meets the education and professional needs of the citizens of Northeast Texas and beyond.  With 111 undergraduate, 45 graduate and 6 doctoral majors, students can choose from new majors such as industrial engineering, e-commerce, new media and environmental science.

The university is positioned to become a leading scientific presence in the region with the new $28 million Science & Technology Center that opened in January early 2006. The 100,000-square-foot facility features one of the only planetariums in the area along with cutting-edge research laboratories, large auditorium-style classrooms, and wireless Internet capability throughout the building.

Construction is at an all time high on campus. The Jerry D. Morris Recreation Center opened in July 2003. The $12 million facility is open to the community through memberships and has a heated leisure pool, 2-tier hot tub with waterfall, 2 sand volleyball courts, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, 45' indoor climbing rock, 3-lane indoor jogging track, 4 racquetball courts, fitness and aerobics rooms. The New Pride Apartments, opened in 2001, is home to 300 students. Other new construction includes an art facility opened in 2004 and the outdoor Cain Sports Complex opened in 2003.  A new 100,000 square foot, $25 million student center has been approved and is in the design stage. It is scheduled to open in 2008.
