The City of Commerce is a Home Rule municipality with a council-manager form of government. The City Council consists of the mayor and 4 council members, elected at-large, and serving two-year staggered terms. There is also a City Planning and Zoning Board, and the city has a Master Plan.
Commerce employs 19 municipal police plus 7 reserve officers. Twelve paid firemen are augmented with 25 volunteer fire fighters. The Texas A&M University-Commerce Police work closely with the Commerce Police Department. Those governing - the Mayor and City Council - are charged with oversight of the city's operation and maintenance, and to ensure that its growth and development is both orderly and economically sound.
